Purpose

1. To help class members understand that God is truly no respecter of person
2. To help class members understand and become prepared to teach truths regarding skin color
3. To help class members become more dependent upon continual in depth study of all scripture and reliant upon the spirit of the Lord to receive truth and help others

Note: This outline is designed to be a brief but significant introduction to the subject matter.  For more thorough scriptural coverage, play segment 2 of the Blacks in the Scriptures DVD series.

Object Lesson 1

Ask for a volunteer (Caucasian) wearing a white shirt.  Ask class members what color is the shirt.  Ask them to now imagine a color scale with white on one end.  Now ask what is on the other end.  (Black) What color is in the middle of that scale?  (Gray)  Now ask the class what color is the volunteer’s face.  They can’t say white, because there’s a stark difference between their face and the white shirt they’re wearing.

Now ask, if you were to gradually darken volunteer’s face, what color would it become? (Brown)  Yes.  We are all just different shades of brown.  There are no actual black or white people.  Those are terms of separation created by man and used to justify elevating ones self and to degrade his brother.

Now show the unity wristband and the different shades of brown and deliver its message.  There are no black or white people.  We are all simply various shades of brown.  We are truly all one and are commanded to be of one heart, of one mind and to be one.

Alternative Object Lesson

Pass around several unity wristbands and ask class members to find the shade closest to their skin color and then pass it on to those sitting near them.  Once they’ve all had a chance, explain to them that all of the colors in the wristband are in the “brown” color scale.  This demonstrates that there are no black or white people, that we are all various shades of brown.  Blacks and whites are terms of separation created by man and used to justify elevating ones self and to degrade his brother.

Scripture Discussion and Application

SKIN COLOR

• 1 Samuel 16:7

Discuss how the Lord is teaching Samuel not to look on the outward appearance to judge one’s worthiness.  And that the Lord does not see as man does, as He only looks upon the heart, but man judges by outward appearances.  Ask - if the Lord is teaching the prophet Samuel not to look upon the outward appearances to judge worthiness, would it be in keeping with His own law if the Lord were to change someone’s skin color (Suggest Cain, Ham or Lamanites) encouraging man to focus on the outward appearance to judge one’s worthiness?  Encourage each in attendance to think about this single gospel principal for themselves in relation to perceived skin color references in all of the standard works.

• Alma 55:4-8

Discuss how Moroni had to search among his people for a descendant of Laman because none of them stood out because of their skin color.  This is much like not needing to conduct a search for African Americans in a Salt Lake City ward.  There are so few and stand out so much so that searching would not be necessary. Discuss how Laman and the small number of Moroni’s men had to identify themselves as Lamanites because the Lamanites could not look at them and tell whether they were Nephites or Lamanites.  Also, even in their presence, the scripture says “and they received them with joy” they could not tell that they were being deceived by Nephites posing as Lamanites.

• Jeremiah 8:21 & Jeremiah 14:2

Read, discuss and follow each footnote for the world “black” demonstrating that they refer to the spiritual state and not the literal color of skin (LDS edition of the standard King James Bible).  Help class members to recognize that the footnoting of Hebrew Idiom reminds us that the Bible text is a translation from an ancient time and foreign language.  That it was not given after the manner of our language, and that many times there is no direct translation from the original language.  So it is critical to increase scripture study and prayer in order to come to clearer understanding.  (See and read D&C 1:24)

• 2 Nephi 5:21

Read and ask what is meant by “skin” in this passage?  Depending on their answers, remind them of the law taught by the Lord to the prophet Samuel in 1 Samuel 16:7.  Read the following quote by Bruce R. McConkie given to CES instructors in August 1978, just two months after the revelation extending priesthood to all worthy males:

“Forget everything that I have said, or what President

Brigham Young or President George Q. Cannon or whoever has said in days past that is contrary to the present revelation. We spoke with a limited understanding and without the light and knowledge that now has come into the world.  We get our truth

and light line upon line and precept upon precept (2 Ne. 28:30; Isa. 28:9-10; D&C 98:11-12; 128:21).  We have now had added a flood of intelligence and light on this particular subject, and it erases all the darkness, all the views and all the thoughts of the past.

Explain that with the additional light and knowledge, we received a new edition of the LDS scriptures 3 years later in 1981, which helped to clarify all that was misunderstood, and if they’d follow each new footnote added, that they will find that there are no loose ends, that all have been accounted for.

Follow new footnote “d” on the word “skin” to 2 Nephi 30:6.  As you or a volunteer read this passage aloud, encourage the class to ask themselves individually, “what does the Lord want me to understand about “skin” that He inspired a new footnote to be put on the word and directed me to this passage?

• 2 Nephi 30:6

Read and point out that before the 1981 edition, the word “pure” was actually “white”.  Then point out the new footnote on the word “scales” and follow it to the bottom of the page where it states clearly that “TG darkness spiritual, TG spiritual blindness”, indicating that the “skin” being spoken of is spiritual and not a literal, physical skin color, which is consistent with everything we’ve covered thus far.

• Jacob 3:8

Read and ask – What is taking place when we are brought before the throne of God? (Judgment)  After receiving verbal response, ask if the Lord is going to judge us on our physical appearance? After receiving resounding “no’s”, explain that the skins being spoken of in this passage cannot be literal then, and must be spiritual.  Read passage again. Explain that this is consistent with all that we’ve read thus far.

• 3 Nephi 2:15

Read and ask class members what does “skin” mean in this passage?  Ask them to follow the new footnote on the word “white”, where they will find 2 Nephi 5:21, 2 Nephi 30:6 and Jacob 3:8.  Explain again that there are no loose ends.  All that made us believe that the Lamanites actually had a darker physical skin than the Nephites, now all have new footnoting or word changes to help us to understand that the passages are actually referring to spiritual darkness or spiritual blindness.

Special note for instructors

It’s important to be spiritually sensitive to your audience when teaching this issue.  There will most likely be at least a few who struggle as they attempt to reconcile this new light in the scriptures with all that has been taught on these issues prior.  You’ll want to manage your time to leave at least 10-15 minutes for this segment of the class which is design to help adjust the unrealistic expectation for church leaders to be perfect.  We have found that the following help to ease their anxiety:

The Lord knew that errors would be made and that leaders would even sin.  And if its ok with the Lord, who are we to judge?  Christ was the only perfect one to walk the earth and all others must use the blessings of the atonement to overcome our human frailties.

D&C 1:24-28 –  Behold, I am God and have spoken it; these ^acommandments are of me, and were given unto my servants in their weakness, after the manner of their ^blanguage, that they might come to ^cunderstanding.

And inasmuch as they ^aerred it might be made known;

And inasmuch as they sought ^awisdom they might be ^binstructed;

And inasmuch as they sinned they might be ^achastened, that they might ^brepent;  And inasmuch as they were ^ahumble they might be made strong, and blessed from on high, and receive ^bknowledge from time to time.

One of the difficult struggles Joseph Smith had came from Saints who were so married to their traditions, that they could not fully embrace the marriage to the Lamb of God.

“I have tried for a number of years to get the minds of the Saints prepared to receive the things of God; but we frequently see some of them, after suffering all they have for the work of God, will fly to pieces like glass as soon as anything comes that is contrary to their traditions: they cannot stand the fire at all. How many will be able to abide a celestial law, and go through and receive their exaltation, I am unable to say, as many are called, but few are chosen [see D&C 121:40].”

Joseph Smith

Brigham Young had great concern about the members falling into blind obedience or failing to seek their own spiritual confirmation regarding the pronouncements of church leaders:

“What a pity it would be, if we were led by one man to utter destruction! Are you afraid of this? I am more afraid that this people have so much confidence in their leaders that they will not inquire for themselves of God whether they are led by him. I am fearful they settle down in a state of blind self-security, trusting their eternal destiny in the hands of their leaders with a reckless confidence that in itself would thwart the purposes of God in their salvation, and weaken the influence they could give to their leaders, did they know for themselves, by the revelations of Jesus, that they are led in the right way. Let every man and woman know, themselves, whether their leaders are walking in the path the Lord dictates, or not. This has been my exhortation continually.”

Conclusion

Encourage each class member to study and pray about each of the passages of scripture covered today in order to receive what God would have them know and understand.  Remind them of our sacred covenants to help edify those around us and to help share the joy of the gospel with others, and that as they seek the Lord to know these truths, He will fill their lamps with oil that they might light that pathway to the gospel for others.  Let them know that there is a wealth of information on the Blacks in the Scriptures website that they can simply read to aid in their study.

Lezione 1

Chiedi a un volontario (Caucasico) di indossare una maglia bianca. Chiedi alla classe di che colore sia la maglia. Chiedigli di immaginare una scala di colori che ha il bianco come colore finale. Chiedi alla classe qual è il primo colore della scala cromatica (Nero). Chiedi alla classe qual’ è il colore che si trova a metà della scala cromatica (Grigio). Chiedi a questo punto alla classe quale sia il colore della faccia del volontario. I tuoi studenti non potranno dire “Bianca,” perché c’è una netta differenza tra la sua faccia e il colore della maglietta.

Chiedi alla tua classe di che colore diverrebbe la faccia del volontario se venisse gradualmente oscurata (Marrone). Esatto, siamo tutti nella scala cromatica del marrone. Non ci sono dei veri neri o dei veri bianchi. Queste categorie di differenziazione sono state create dell’uomo per giustificare l’umiliazione dei suoi fratelli.

Esempio Alternativo

Fai passare tra la classe alcuni braccialetti colorati e chiedi ad ogni studente di prendere quello che più si avvicina al colore della sua pelle. Quando tutti avranno scelto il colore più appropriato fai notare che tutti i braccialetti solo nella scala cromatica del marrone. Questo esempio dimostra non ci sono neri o bianchi, ma che siamo tutti, chi più chi meno, marroni. Bianchi e neri sono termini che separano e sono stati creati dall’uomo per giustificare l’umiliazione dei suoi fratelli.

Scritture e Applicazione

COLORE DELLA PELLE

• 1 Samuele 16:7

Discuti con la classe che il Signore ha insegnato a Samuele a non guardare l’apparenza, ma a giudicare il valore personale. Fai presente che il Signore non vede ciò che vede l’uomo, Egli guarda il cuore mentre l’uomo giudica dalle apparenze esteriori. Poni la seguente domanda: se il Signore ha insegnato a Samuele a non valutare le apparenze, ma a giudicare il valore personale,  manterrebbe le Sue leggi se cambiasse questo principio a causa del colore della pelle (suggerisci Caino, Cam o i Lamaniti), incoraggiando così l’uomo a giudicare dalle apparenze per valutare il valore personale? Incoraggia gli studenti ad avere questo principio in mente mentre valutano i riferimenti al colore della pelle nelle Scritture.

• Alma 55:4-8

Fai prensente di come Moroni avesse dovuto cercare tra la sua gente un discendente di Laman, perché nessuno dei suoi spiccava per il colore della sua pelle. Non c’è bisogno di cercare Afro-Americani in un rione di Salt Lake City, ce ne pochi e si distinguono talmente bene che il “cercarli” sarebbe infruttuoso. Fai presente che Laman e il manipolo di uomini di Moroni si finsero Lamaniti, e i veri Lamaniti non si accorsero che erano Nefiti. La scrittura dice che quando erano tutti insieme, “lo ricevettero con gioia” perché non capirono che stavano per essere ingannati da Nefiti che si fingevano Lamaniti.

• Geremia 8:21 e Geremia 14:2

Leggete questi versetti e seguite, nelle note a piè di pagina, la parola “black.” I riferimenti successivi dimostrano che ci si riferisce allo stato spirituale e non al colore della pelle (LDS edition King James Version, ndt, la traduzione italiana della SBBF rende proprio il concetto di annebbiamento spirituale). Aiuta i tuoi studenti a capire che il mettere note a piè pagina rende più chiari i concetti di una data parola ebraica. La Bibbia è una traduzione di scritti antichi in una lingua non nostra, e spesso, i significati delle parole non hanno diretta corrispondenza nella nostra lingua. Per questa ragione è necessario aumentare lo studio delle scritture e la preghiera per poter giungere a una comprensione chiara (leggi con la classe DeA 1:24).

• 2 Nefi 5:21

Leggi e chiedi alla classe che cosa si intende con “pelle” in questo versetto. A seconda delle loro risposte, ricorda loro la legge insegnata dal Signore al profeta Samuele in 1 Samuele 16:7. Leggi la seguente citazione dell’Anziano Bruce R. McConkie, presa da un discorso ai dirigenti del CES dell’Agosto 1978, solo due mesi dopo la rivelazione che estendeva il sacerdozio a tutti gli uomini degni:

“Dimenticate tutto quello che io ho detto, o che Presidente Brigham Young o che Presidente George Q. Cannon o chiunque altro abbia mai detto prima e che ora è contrario alla presente rivelazione. Abbiamo parlato con una comprensione limitata e senza la luce e la conoscenza che è ora giunta nel mondo.Noi  riceviamo la nostra verità linea su linea e precetto su precetto (2 Ne. 28:30; Isa. 28:9-10; DeA 98:11-12; 128:21). Siamo stati inondati da nuova intelligenza e luce su questo particolare argomento che cancellano l’oscurità e tutte le opinioni e pensieri del passato. Non contano più.”

Spiega alla classe che, grazie alla nuova luce e conoscenza, abbiamo ricevuto una nuova edizione delle Scritture tre anni dopo il 1978, che ci aiuta nel chiarire tutto quello che era stato mal inteso.

Segui la nuova nota a piè pagina “d” sulla parola “pelle” in 2 Nefi 30:6 (ndt, non presente nella versione del Libro di Mormon in italiano). Chiedi a un volontario di leggere questo versetto a voce alta, e invita la classe a riflettere sulla seguente domanda, “perché il Signore vuole che io comprenda la parola “pelle,” visto che Egli ha ispirato una nuova nota a piè pagina?”

• 2 Nefi 30:6

Sottolinea che nella versione delle Scritture precedente il 1981, la parola “puro” era “bianco.” La nuova nota a piè pagina sulla parola “scaglie” (ndt, il testo italiano non ha tradotto un pronome dall’inglese e,complessivamente, il significato generale è un po’ infelice. Il testo in inglese dice: “and THEIR scales of darkness shall begin to fall…” Il testo italiano invece: “le scaglie di tenebre cominceranno a cader…” La scrittura in inglese dice che le loro differenze di pelle scura –e non di pelle nera- non saranno più notate dai loro occhi del giro di poche generazioni) porta alla guida alle scritture (solo testo inglese) alle voci “TG darkness spiritual, TG spiritual blindness” che intendono “pelle” dal suo significato spirituale, e non fisico.

• Giacobbe 3:8

Leggi e chiedi “Che cosa succederà quando saremo portati davanti il trono di Dio?” Dopo aver ricevuto le risposte, domanda ai tuoi studenti se il Signore ci giudicherà per le nostre apparenze esteriori. Dop che avranno risposto no, spiega che il colore della pelle di cui si parla in questa scrittura non può essere letterale ma, anche qui, spirituale. Leggi questo versetto di nuovo. Chiarisci che è in armonia con tutto quello che avete letto fin ora.

• 3 Nefi 2:15

Fai leggere e chiedi ai tuoi studenti che cosa significa la parola “pelle” in questo versetto. Segui la nota sulla parola “bianca,” che vi porterà su 2 Nefi 5:21, 2 Nefi 30:6 e Giacobbe 3:8 (ndt, solo la versione inglese del Libro di Mormon) e spiega alla classe che non ci sono punti poco chiari. Tutto ci farebbe credere che i Lamaniti avessero una pelle più scura dei Nefiti, ma tutte le nuove note a piè pagina ci aiuta a capire che questi versetti si riferiscono all’oscurità spirituale o alla ciecità spirituale.

Note speciali per gli insegnanti

È molto importante essere spiritualmente ricettivi quando insegnate questo aromento. Ci saranno sicuramente alcuni dei vostri studenti che non capiranno questa nuova luce e conoscenza a causa di tutto ciò che gli è stato insegnato prima. Sarebbe meglio organizzare la lezione avendo almeno 10 o 15 minuti per spiegare alla classe che non è realistico aspettarsi la perfezione dai dirigenti della Chiesa. Abbiamo scoperto che i seguenti passaggi sono di grande aiuto per attenuare l’ansia dei vostri alunni:

Il Signore sapeva che sarebbero stati commessi errori e che i Suoi dirigenti avrebbero anche peccato. Se il Signore lo sapeva, chi siamo noi per giudicare? Cristo è stato l’unico uomo perfetto ad aver camminato sulla terra, mentre tutti gli altri devono essere partecipi della benedizione dell’espiazione per superare le fragilità umane.

DeA 1:24-28 Ecco, io sono Dio e l’ho detto; questi comandamenti vengono da me, e furono dati ai            miei servitori nella loro debolezza, secondo il loro linguaggio, affinché arrivino a comprendere. E             nella misura in cui errarono, fosse reso noto; E nella misura in cui cercarono lasaggezza, fossero             istruiti; E nella misura in cui peccarono, fossero castigati, per potersi pentire; E nella misura in cui             furono umili, fossero fortificati e benedetti dall’alto, e ricevessero conoscenza di tanto in tanto.

Una delle maggiori difficoltà che Joseph Smith affrontò fu il legame tra i Santi e le loro tradizioni, cosa che impediva loro di poter abbracciare pienamente il vangelo di Gesù Cristo;

“Ho cercato molte volte, durante questi anni, a preparare le menti dei Santi a ricevere le cose di            Dio; spesso però vediamo alcuni di loro, dopo che hanno sofferto tutto ciò che avevano per l’opera            di Dio, che vanno in pezzi, come un vetro, non appena notano qualcosa di contrario alle loro      tradizioni…Non sono capace di quantificare quanti di loro saranno capaci di sostenere una legge celeste e passare oltre per ricevere la loro esaltazione, perché sebbene molti siano chiamati, pochi sono scelti [vedere DeA 121:40].

Brigham Young si preoccupava molto a che i membri non cadessero nella cieca obbedienza, ma che trovassero le loro conferme spirituali circa le affermazioni dei dirigenti della chiesa:

Io temo moltissimo che questo popolo abbia talmente fiducia nei suoi dirigenti da non sentire la necessità di chiedere direttamente a Dio se esso è guidato da Lui. Io temo che esso si adagi in una condizione di cieca sicurezza, con la certezza che il suo destino eterno è nelle mani dei suoi dirigenti, con la incauta fiducia che potrebbe ostacolare i disegni di Dio sulla sua salvezza e indebolire l’influenza  che esso potrebbe avere sui suoi dirigenti se sapesse personalmente, per mezzo delle rivelazioni di Gesù, di essere guidato nella direzione giusta. Possa ogni uomo e ogni donna sapere, per mezzo dei suggerimenti dello Spirito di Dio, se i suoi dirigenti camminano o no sul sentiero indicato dal Signore.”  Discorsi, pagina 134

Conclusione

Incoraggia ogni membro della classe a studiare e a pregare su ogni versetto trattato oggi affinché possa ricevere quello che Dio vuole che lui conosca e capisca. Ricorda a ogni membro della classe le nostre sacre alleanze di edificare coloro che ci circondano e di condividere con gli altri la gioia del vangelo. Ricorda loro che se cercheranno il Signore per conoscere queste verità, Egli riempirà le loro lampade con olio affinché possano avere luce per illuminare il sentiero del vagnelo agli altri. Fa sapere ai tuoi studenti che ci sono molte informazioni sul sito “Blacks in the Scriptures” che possono essere di sostegno nei loro studi.
